Top 10 Desserts of South America
By Tobin Kassels
It is my goal to fully trial and embrace the foods of Chile (and Argentina). Here is my run down of the desserts, to this point in time…there is still time for plenty more. It says top ten because that sounds better than top 13 but I just couldn’t leave any of them out. #13-1 with 1 being the best.
13. Cinnamon Roll - Straight from the local bakery (which panaderias are everywhere as bread is the primary meal). This is delicious but wait to hear the rest.
3stars
Best place to find this dessert: The place across from Huguitos
12. Kuchen – a classic to the area from the town’s (Frutillar) german influence. Good but should be better for the number of places its sold.
3 stars
Best place to find this dessert: Kuchenladen because its fun to say…sounds like land of kuchen.
11. Strudel- sold at Volcan Osorno. Great treat to put in your pocket while skiing. Like a desert empanada. Well maybe not really. Overall great but not fine dining worthy.
3 stars
Best place to find this dessert: Volcan Osorno for the effects
10. Creme brulet de naranja - Now this tasted like eating a cloud with a hint of orange and a little crispy hail on top.
3 1/2 stars
Best place to find this dessert: Hortensia
9. Helado- (ice cream) -two flavors mint and dulce de leche. Mint is amazing. Ice cream tastes straight from the cow. Dulce de leche sweet by itself but even better in ice cream.
4 stars

8. Torta – its cake but better. Chocolate cake.
4 stars

4 1/2 stars
Best place to find this desert: Merken
5. Parfait de mantequilla de mani - (Peanut butter parfait) - I have to admit I did not know what I was ordering and sounded fluffy, well it wasn’t. But still the texture and taste were exquisite and like nothing I have ever tasted in a dessert. Check out the photo below with Noah, me and the yumminess.
4 1/2 stars
Best place to find this dessert: Hortensia
4. Chocolate Mouse – this is not just one element. It is surrounded by almonds and a tube of chocolate. Chocolate…again made with milk from those cows right out back.
4 1/2 stars
